September has swept in. I adore this month not just because it's my birthday month but because it holds an air of new beginnings. In issue #4 Fall 2014 Porter magazine used the French term, La Rentree, which simply means, "Back to school" to describe the freshness and anticipation of the new season. I love what Lucy Yeomans, the editor of Porter says.
"As grown-ups, the brand new pencil case and shiny new pair of school shoes that signal a fresh start are replaced by new season updates that we hope will deliver so much more than just the latest look: the confidence-boosting coat, that uplifting new shade of lipstick...But it really is the change of attitude that matters most, the yearning to be smarter, stronger, more balanced - in short the eternal quest to finally get life 'right.'"
While I know I will never actually get all things "right" in my life, each fall season I feel compelled to try my very best. To work a little harder. Eat healthier. Get more sleep. Spend more time being still.
The ocean is the place where my soul most easily finds rest. In Southern California, September is one of the locals' favorite months because the weather is still warm, the summer crowds have dissipated, and the beaches have become our own again. Today's look finds me on a jetty at the edge of Dana Point Harbor. I'm staying warm with a beautiful handmade, long waist, camel coat from Zara. I love how this coat contrasts my monochromatic black pants and shirt but also adds a bit of elegant drama with its voluminous draping. I accessorized with a bold pearl ring and a simple pendant necklace to add a bit of understated glamour.
I hope that the spirit of newness finds you this weekend and encourages you to begin again!
